I have been using a New Lifestyles Digi-Walker for several years, but I was intrigued by the Omron HJ-112 through reviews I read of it and because it has the 7-day memory. The main reason I wanted to try it is that it was supposed to work in any position, not be as sensitive to orientation as the Digi-Walker.
It's true that this Omron model will work in any position. I have carried it in the inside pocket of a suitcoat, in the pocket of my jacket, and clipped to my belt. In each case the device continues to record steps accurately.
There are three problems to note, however.
1) This one is minor: The unit is glaringly obtrusive. The Digi-Walker is almost invisible when worn on a belt; the Omron is hardly that.
2) Because the Omron's controls are exposed when worn (the Digi-Walker's are protected when the case is closed) it is easy to bump them. One day I must have hit a reset button accidentally and found at day's end I hadn't moved at all according to the device! Another problem this orientation causes is that it must be removed to see the readout; the Digi-Walker is easy to read without removing it from a belt.
3) The belt clip on the Omron is very poor. The Digi-Walker's clip held almost without fail for all the years I used it; the tether and clip hardly needed. Be sure to use the tether and clip with the Omron. It does not grip well and either comes upclipped or the device slips out of the holder; this happens at least a couple of times every day. Without the strap it will be quickly lost or damaged.Get more detail about
